Best Tasting Water
May 2013

The inaugural award for Best Tasting Water in NSW was judged and presented as part of the Water Industry Operators Association’s (WIOA) Annual NSW Conference and Exhibition held at the Exhibition Park in Canberra during April 2013.

Three finalists were chosen using a “Masterchef” style tasting by the delegates at the welcome reception, with Shoalhaven Water receiving second place.

The Orica NSW Water Taste Test is a fun and exciting way to raise awareness of the quality of NSW’s drinking water and to recognise the efforts of local water service providers in delivering valuable water services to their communities.

Water Mains Cleaning in Lake Tabourie
March 2013

Shoalhaven Water has scheduled water mains cleaning (known as mains flushing or mains scouring) in the Lake Tabourie area during the second week of April. This routine maintenance will ensure the ongoing supply of high quality drinking water.

As part of the cleaning process, Council’s crews will effectively clean the water mains by operating standpipes at certain hydrant points within the distribution system under high flow rates.  This flushing process consists of cleaning or ‘scouring’ the water mains by sending a rapid flow of water through the water mains.

During the cleaning exercise the water service in this area may be temporarily interrupted on Tuesday 9th, Wednesday 10th, or Thursday 11th April, during the hours of 9am through to 3pm.  During this period it is advised to store drinking water prior to the shutdown.

Recent Appointment to Water Industry Leadership Roles
December 2012

It was announced last month that the Director of Shoalhaven Water, Mrs Carmel Krogh has been elected to the Board of the Australian Water Association (AWA).

The AWA is Australia’s leading association for water professionals and organisations, playing an essential role in supporting the Australian water sector in the delivery of effective and sustainable water management practices.   Carmel, who has 30 years experience in the water industry, will take up this appointment in May 2013.

Shoalhaven City Council General Manager, Russ Pigg described Mrs Krogh’s election to the AWA Board as substantial recognition of her professional standing within the National water industry. Her presence on the board, which is a part time commitment, will provide the Shoalhaven Community and other regional Australian Water Utilities with a voice in the management of water issues unique to such areas.

In addition, Mrs Krogh has also been appointed to the Board of the Sydney Catchment Authority (SCA). The SCA manages over 16,000 square kilometres of drinking water catchments extending from Lithgow in the north and south to the headwaters of the Shoalhaven River near Cooma.

Mrs Krogh will bring a wealth of engineering experience and knowledge to this appointment.  Shoalhaven Water and Shoalhaven City Council congratulate her on behalf of the community for these very significant achievements.

Porters Creek Hydro Project
November 2012

Shoalhaven Water has now successfully negotiated with a NZ joint venture group for the design, manufacture, installation and commissioning of a containerized mini hydro electric generating unit to be located immediately upstream of the Milton Water Treatment Plant inlet works. Allied Industrial Engineering Ltd and HydroWorks Ltd offered a Pelton Wheel Hydro Generating unit for this project.

Under the existing operating conditions, it is expected that the pelton wheel hydro generating unit will generate up to around 100kW, which will provide the energy needs for operating the Milton WTP with any excess power that has been generated being returned to the grid.

The current program for the project has the hydro generating unit being installed & commissioned at the end of July 2013.

Chlorine Implementation Trial
November 2012

Shoalhaven Water is implementing an additional chlorine dosing system on a trial basis for areas south of Ulladulla. This chlorination system will be used to more effectively maintain disinfection residuals for the southern water supply system.

Chlorine is used as a disinfectant, that is, to kill harmful micro-organisms that may be present in the water supply and to prevent micro-organisms regrowing in the distribution systems. The maintenance of disinfection residuals within the drinking water supply system forms an important part of Shoalhaven Water’s multiple barrier approach to drinking water quality management and compliance with the 2011 Australian Drinking Water Guidelines (ADWG).

Should you have any questions concerning the trial please contact Shoalhaven Water on (02) 4429 3214 or by email water@shoalhaven.nsw.gov.au.

National Water Week
21-27 October 2012

Shoalhaven Water is hosting a range of events during this year’s National Water Week. National Water Week is an annual community event that helps raise awareness and improve understanding of water issues in Australia.  “It is the only event that provides a National focus for water issues and in particular promoting the important message of water conservation to help protect this most precious resource” said the Director of Shoalhaven Water Mrs Carmel Krogh.  Mrs Krogh said that the National theme for Water Week 2012 was “Valuing our Water” and in the Shoalhaven, residents take this message seriously by the number of visitors that tour our water treatment facilities each year.  “This is a very popular tour” she said, “it provides our customers with firsthand knowledge about our treatment processes, and the quality of the end product from taps when it’s compared to the original murky source condition of the water”.

Tours of the Shoalhaven Water Treatment Plants are conducted regularly and customers are welcome to register for a tour with Shoalhaven Water on 44293214
